SAT Math Prep Camp
This is a two-week intensive course, offered over the summer of 2023.
The only way to score well on the SAT Math Test, calculator and non-calculator, is to be experienced with the material and the question formatting. The SAT Math Prep Course is designed to teach you the concepts and testing techniques that you will need to know for all the question types referring to Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. The goal is for every SAT question to be a simple reflex, something you know how to handle instinctively because you have seen it many times before. In order to improve your score significantly, you must put in the required work.
Prerequisites
Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2
Lessons include
- Review the format of the test, all Formulas needed for the SAT - what is provided and what needs to be memorized
- Review essential graphing calculator skills to help on the calculator portion of the SAT Math test
- A Practice SAT Test will be assigned each week for independent practice
- Exponents and Radicals
- Solving Equations & Absolute Value Equations
- Linear Functions
- Quadratic Functions
- Solving Systems of Equations
- Functions
- Triangles
- Right Triangle Trigonometry
- Circles
- Statistics I
- Statistics II
The amount and pace of content coverage will depend on the prior knowledge of students enrolled as well as class interest on various topics with a desire to dive deeper into specific content.
This is a secular class.
Schedule
Class will meet from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Monday through Friday from 7/24 to 8/4/23. Students are expected to bring food for a working lunch.
The ability to attend class regularly will be important for continuity of information. Students unable to attend a class should expect additional work in order to be prepared. Please arrive promptly, prepared to hit the ground running.
We will take attendance, but only for our own internal accountability. Spaces are limited, so only sign up if you intend to attend regularly, as you will be taking a slot that could have been occupied by somebody else.
Cost
Tuition is $400 for two weeks. Half is due to reserve your spot and the remainder is due by the first class.
Assignments and Grading
There will be practice tests assigned for homework. This is a demanding class with a lot of material. Students will be expected to have completed all assignments. In addition to a certificate of completion, we can issue a formal grade for the class, which will be based on homework and classroom performance. Alternately, parents are welcome to assign their own grade for their child based on our feedback, but this will not be on a Winston Hall Academy transcript.
The nature of the SAT test requires some memorization, in addition to becoming familiar with the material and how to go about solving problems. Our goal is to understand and be able to apply mathematical principles.
Students should be prepared to take notes during the lecture and to, for example, complete worksheets in class. Students will also need to have access to a computer, internet and a Google account. If your student does not have an email account, we can provide one @winstonhall.org. Students should also have access to a webcam with the ability to meet online. It would not be the intended method, but can be a good alternative for when weather is poor or otherwise dictated by various circumstances. We can also use online meetings for homework help/office hours.
Involvement by parents is key, but we will not expect you to do any of the teaching. What we will expect from parents is this:
- Respond to our emails, usually in the form of "Got it"
- Ensure your student(s) complete the homework and reading assignments
- Get your student(s) to class on time
- Don't get mad if we run overtime. We don't have a bell that rings and we won't stop mid-sentance because the clock hit a number. Feel free to come in and pull your student(s) out if you need to go, though
- Be responsive if we ask something and abide by the written policies of the school, which will be provided to you prior to registering
Involvement by your student is even more important. What I will expect from students is this:
- Be attentive in class
- Do your homework - read the assignment and work the problems
- Ask questions
New students may require an in-person interview before being accepted into this class. Students may be denied entry into the class at my sole discretion, for reasons which may include lack of maturity, lack of interest in math or lack of tolerance of viewpoints with which they may not agree.
Class Materials
We will provide the curricular materials needed for this course.
Students are required to bring their calculators, pencils, and the packet we provide. If they come without a calculator, we will NOT supply one for them to use. They need to be familiar with how their specific calculator works in order to have the same calculator with them on the day of the test. Students don't need a graphing calculator, but if they have one, they can bring it with them. Sometimes having the ability to see some graphs on the calculator portion of the test is good, but it's not essentail. I am most familiar with the TI-84's. If students have a Casio they will have to do a little investigating as to how certain functions work on their calculator as I am not familiar with them.
